October 23, 2023

Defeat Duchenne Canada, the country’s leading organization dedicated to ending Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa McCoy as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

With over 20 years of experience in the not-for-profit sector, Lisa has a proven track record of success in leadership and strategic guidance. She most recently served as the Executive Director at Tourette Canada, where she gained valuable experience in mobilizing staff and stakeholders toward creating positive change.

Lisa’s extensive background includes working with prominent health-related organizations such as the MS Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Canadian Cancer Society. Lisa has demonstrated a passion for inclusivity throughout her career and consistently placed stakeholders at the center of decision-making processes. This approach has allowed her to engage with patients, families, researchers, clinicians, and government representatives, ensuring that diverse perspectives are heard and valued.

“I am thrilled to join the Defeat Duchenne Canada team and contribute to the vital vision: a future without Duchenne,” said Lisa McCoy. “I am deeply inspired by the dedication and passion of the community members, and I am committed to working hand in hand with them to drive meaningful change and improved outcomes for those affected by this life-shortening disease.”

As the new CEO, Lisa will continue to build upon the strong 28-year foundation established by Defeat Duchenne Canada (formerly Jesse’s Journey), pressing for access to life-changing treatments not yet available in Canada, funding visionary international research, and expanding programming to meet the evolving needs of children and young adults living with this fatal disease, as well as their caregivers and communities. She is known for her ability to create innovative collaborations and will be instrumental in further enhancing partnerships to advance the organization’s mission.

“We are confident that Lisa will provide the visionary leadership required to take Defeat Duchenne Canada to new heights. Her extensive experience and inclusive approach will have a lasting and positive impact on the lives of those we serve.”
