Defeat Duchenne Canada is pleased to share the publication of “Expanding Vamorolone Treatment Access for Canadians with Duchenne” in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences.

Supported by Defeat Duchenne Canada, the paper brings together Canadian neuromuscular specialists, paediatric endocrinologists and patient advocates to examine the evolving treatment landscape for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and the importance of timely and equitable access to treatment.

In October 2025, Health Canada approved AGAMREE® (vamorolone), the first approved therapy for DMD in Canada for people living with DMD aged four years of age and older. 

While the Health Canada approval of vamorolone represents an important advancement in the Canadian DMD landscape, its approval is only the first step. Ensuring that eligible individuals can access AGAMREE® through provincial and territorial drug plans in a timely and equitable way is critical. The paper also highlights the importance of maintaining access to other treatment options, including deflazacort, and building a more coordinated approach to treatment access for DMD and other rare diseases.

This publication is an important contribution to the conversation about what Canadians living with DMD need today and how we can build a stronger, more accessible treatment landscape for the future.
