At Defeat Duchenne Canada, we believe that advancing research is the key to finding a cure and enhancing care for those affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

On January 30, 2025, we announced the recipients of the 2024 Research Grants, made possible by supporters like YOU. This year, Defeat Duchenne Canada will grant $905,000 toward two promising research projects. The two new projects will enter a three-year agreement, joining eight other research projects in years two and three of their funding.

Meet the two new researchers:

1. Dr. Francesco Muntoni (UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, UK) is researching AAV gene therapy for DMD related brain dystrophin deficiency. His work will provide critical insights into how Duchenne affects the brain and how gene therapy could address these challenges.
2. Dr. Alain Stintzi’s (University of Ottawa) research project is titled “Unlocking Therapeutic Potential: Exploring Gut Microbiota Functionality for Novel and Cost-effective DMD Treatment.” His research combines genetics, medicine, chemistry, and bioinformatics to explore how gut health may impact disease progression and treatment.
