World Duchenne Awareness Day 2026

Starts September 7, 2026
Event Type: Virtual
Event Category: Advocacy
Audience Type: Everyone

WDAD 2026 BannerSeptember 7 is World Duchenne Awareness Day – let’s unite globally to shine a light on Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This year’s theme, Access Changes Lives, reminds us of something simple but powerful: access changes what’s possible for people living with Duchenne.

Access means equitable pathways to early diagnosis, specialist care, clinical trials, and emerging therapies. And it means something bigger: the opportunity for every person living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy to fully take part in life, from school and work to sports, travel, and community.

Over the past two decades, collaboration among researchers, clinicians, industry and the Duchenne community have transformed the treatment landscape. New therapies are offering hope and new possibilities for preserving muscle function and quality of life. Canadian families have helped drive this progress through clinical trials and research. Canada has the expertise and community to help shape the next generation of Duchenne innovation. Now, we need to ensure access keeps pace with that progress.

On World Duchenne Day, we celebrate how far we’ve come and the people who have helped get us here. Real progress isn’t only measured by scientific breakthroughs. It’s measured by whether every individual and family, no matter where they live, can access the care, support, and opportunities they need to live a full and connected life.

How to Get Involved

Click the button to the left to access the letter template.

When a landmark lights up red, Duchenne becomes visible to everyone who passes by. That visibility is where access begins; the more people who see and understand Duchenne, the stronger our push for equitable access to care.

  1. Use the letter template to reach out to local landmarks, monuments, and businesses in your community, asking them to light up red on or around September 7.
  2. Once booked, email us the location and date ([email protected]), and we’ll add it to the list.
  3. Be sure to take a picture and share it with us by posting it on your social media using #WDAD2026 and tagging @defeatduchenne on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or X,
