Roche has decided to stop developing satralizumab as a treatment to improve bone health in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Satralizumab is a drug that works by blocking a protein linked to inflammation. Researchers had hoped that the drug might help protect bone strength in Duchenne.
The decision to discontinue developing satralizumab was not due to safety concerns, but because the company felt it would be difficult to complete the study and meet approval requirements.
The ongoing SHIELD DMD Phase 2 trial will continue for current participants until key data (at 6 months) is collected. Although this program is stopping, Roche plans to share the study results to help future research. Overall, while this is disappointing news, research into bone health in Duchenne is still ongoing, and this study may still provide valuable insights.
