Satellos Bioscience has announced new data about their oral medicine SAT-3247. This treatment aims to rebuild lost muscle in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), independent of dystrophin amount and mutation.
A Phase 1 trial for this treatment looked at five adults with DMD (ages 20-27) and 72 healthy volunteers. All DMD patients were on steroid treatment during the trial.
Over 28 days, SAT-3247 was generally safe, with mild side effects for both volunteers and patients.
Study results showed a general increase in muscle strength. Activities like gripping and breathing highlighted this functional change. After treatment, patients showed:
- 118.6% increase in dominant hand gripping strength
- 97.9% increase in nondominant hand gripping strength
- Grip strength matching with higher amounts of SAT-3247 available in the body
- 5.8% increase in forced vital capacity
Satellos is now planning two studies to further investigate benefits:
1. The company plans to invite this study’s adult patients to an 11-month follow-up study of SAT 3247 alongside DMD patients aged 16-25. Here, researchers will examine long-term safety, muscle strength, and the amount of fat in the biceps muscle.
2. Satellos plans to perform a Phase 2 randomized, global study of SAT-3247 in ambulatory children with DMD. This study will focus on the safety of SAT-3247 in this group and its effect on muscle healing and force.
